What has Thymosin Alpha-1 research found?
Start with the limits. Then see what happened in people, mice, and cells in a dish.
How did the studies start?
Goldstein’s team began with a small compound from calf thymus. They wanted to learn which part helped your immune cells work. That search led to Thymosin Alpha-1. Later studies asked what the compound might do for you during illness.
You’ll meet three kinds of proof here. First, you see work on cells in a dish. Then you see human studies. Last, you get a name guide because several thymosin drugs sound alike.
Long-term hepatitis B has the strongest repeated result. The early sepsis hope didn’t hold up in the largest trial. COVID results also disagree. You can match each number to a nearby paper. The thymosin alpha 1 mechanism of action page explains the cell work. Nothing here tells you which treatment to take.
What is thymosin alpha-1, and what makes it a thymosin alpha 1 peptide?
This began with a calf gland, not patients. Thymosin alpha-1 is a peptide, or short protein chain. Its 28-amino-acid chain uses small protein parts. The count helps you tell compounds apart, not whether one works.
Your body cuts the chain from a larger 113-amino-acid protein. The first part needs a small chemical change for the compound to work [1]. Goldstein’s team found it in a thymus mix called fraction 5. That name helps you identify the mix. They mapped the thymosin alpha 1 peptide chain in 1977 [1].
You can picture one strip cut from a larger cloth.

Do Ta1 peptide and thymalfasin mean the same drug?
Yes. ta1 peptide is a short name for Thymosin Alpha-1. Both names tell you the same 28-amino-acid chain of protein parts. The lab-made drug copy is called thymalfasin [4]. You may see doctors use that name in trials and countries where it is sold.
You won’t see the sales name used abroad. This page uses thymalfasin or Thymosin Alpha-1. Either name means the same compound.
How can one compound both alert and quiet immune cells?
You are looking at cells in a dish, not patients. Thymosin Alpha-1 touched threat-sensing parts on two kinds of immune cells. One kind spots danger and alerts other cells. The other patrols your blood and can move into body tissue [5].
After that touch, the first cells became better at warning attack cells. A second change used up one protein building block around the cells. You can read that as a calming change in the dish.
The same threat sensor was needed for the change. A calming message has 10 in its lab name. That number is a name, not an amount. The dish also held more cells that can quiet an immune response [5]. Lab work shows both an alarm and a brake. It doesn’t show what would happen to you.
What changed for people with hepatitis B who got thymalfasin?
The limit comes first. This review joined eight trials with 583 patients. You are looking at people with long-term hepatitis B. Each trial compared lamivudine alone with lamivudine plus thymalfasin. You can think of lamivudine as a virus pill.
A virus marker left the blood, and a defense marker appeared, in 45.1% of the two-drug group. The same useful change happened in 15.2% of the pill-only group [14]. The plan also beat entecavir, another virus pill, on virus blood tests in people with liver scarring.
This is the clearest repeated result for you to weigh.
Another review found better virus control and fewer returns with Thymosin Alpha-1 [13]. Studies used 1.6 mg in shots under the skin. That isn’t a dose for you.
What do thymosin alpha 1 covid studies say about survival?
First, note the limit. The early thymosin alpha 1 covid report covered records for 76 people with severe COVID-19. It didn’t assign care by chance. Deaths were 11.11% with the compound and 30.00% without it. The gap may look hopeful to you. Yet the report can’t prove the drug caused it. People with few key immune cells had more after treatment. Their cells had fewer wear signs, numbered 1 and 3 in the paper [6]. Those numbers are names, not test results.
A dish study exposed donated immune cells to the virus, then added Thymosin Alpha-1. Three swelling signs fell, including those numbered 6 and 8. A calming sign numbered 10 rose [15]. The digits aren’t amounts. This result can’t tell you whether a patient would live longer.
A 2022 review joined results from roughly 5,300 patients and found no clear drop in deaths. You still can’t call the COVID result settled.

How is thymosin alpha 1 vs thymosin beta 4 different?
First, you need to know that thymosin alpha 1 vs thymosin beta 4 compares two compounds. Thymosin Alpha-1 is an immune drug with a 28-amino-acid chain of small protein parts. Thymosin beta-4 is sold for research as “TB-500.” Its 43-amino-acid chain, made of the same kind of parts, is tied to tissue repair. You can compare the sizes, but size doesn’t make the drugs alike. Beta-4, not Alpha-1, appears on sports drug watchlists.
An older lab study mixed human immune cells. Alpha-1 helped one set of cells grow. Beta-4 let another set hold them back [9]. The study didn’t test care in people. You can’t treat the drug names as substitutes.
Thymulin, thymopentin, thymalin, and prothymosin alpha are different too. The larger 113-amino-acid parent protein is prothymosin alpha. The body cuts Thymosin Alpha-1 from it.
| Compound | Size | What it is | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thymosin Alpha-1 (thymalfasin) | 28 protein parts | An immune compound from the thymus. | This site covers it. It isn’t a muscle drug. |
| Thymosin beta-4 (“TB-500”) | 43 protein parts | A compound tied to cell structure. | It’s different and appears on the sports list. |
| Thymulin | 9 protein parts | A tiny compound that needs zinc. | It won’t work without zinc. |
| Thymopentin | 5 protein parts | A small lab-made piece. | Its old lab name also ends in 5. That number is only a name. |
| Thymalin | extract | A mix taken from calf thymus. | This isn’t one pure compound. |
| Prothymosin alpha | 113 protein parts | The larger parent protein. | The body cuts Thymosin Alpha-1 from it. |
What did immune-disease studies find in blood, cells, and mice?
You need these limits first: one blood study, two dish studies, and one mouse study. None tells you whether the drug treats immune disease.
A blood study of 320 people found lower Thymosin Alpha-1 levels in psoriatic arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and lupus. People with psoriatic arthritis had the lowest levels [8]. A low level doesn’t tell you whether more would help or harm.
Another lab study used cells from people whose multiple sclerosis comes and goes. The paper numbered three swelling signs 6, 8, and 1. It numbered two calming signs 10 and 35. Those names don’t give you amounts. The drug lowered the first group and raised the second [11].
In mice, the compound cut bowel harm from a cancer treatment. A calming immune step began outside the tumor, but not inside it [12]. That doesn’t show what would happen to you. A lab study also used cells from children with aplastic anemia. That illness keeps marrow from making enough blood. The compound helped young blood-forming cells quiet an immune attack [10].
These findings don’t tell you that sick people would get better.
What do thymosin alpha 1 reviews say held up?
You can start with the best sepsis test, the phase-3 TESTS trial. It enrolled 1,106 adults. The 28-day death rates were 23.4% with the compound and 24.1% with placebo, a shot with no drug. Its 95% range allowed for some help or some harm [3].
The compound didn’t help people live longer.
You can compare that with the smaller ETASS trial. It was a 361-patient study. It found a 26.0%-versus-35.0% gap in deaths [2]. Yet its size left room for chance. TESTS didn’t find the same benefit.
Across thymosin alpha 1 reviews, long-term hepatitis B has the steadiest support. COVID and immune-disease findings are less sure. A four-decade review found many study plans and few serious harms. It also found wide differences between studies, often from one region [4]. For your choice, you can’t call the drug proven for sepsis.
